Introduction
The obvious advantages of being a Bard LLI member include participating in, and learning from, a rich variety of courses, plus establishing new friendships. Members of Bard LLI are considered part of the Bard College community and have numerous other advantages that some may not be aware of. Below is an abbreviated list of those perks.
Free Parking, Student IDs, and Access to Bard Libraries
- Parking: To park on the Bard campus you must have a parking hangtag issued to you by the Bard Office of Security displayed on your rearview mirror and park in unrestricted areas. Those with NYS Disability Access tags and a Bard LLI tag may park in the limited spaces reserved for those with disabilities. LLI members are not charged for the LLI parking hangtag, and it has no expiration date.
- Bard Student ID: LLI Members may get a photo Bard Student ID card, which is issued at the ID Department in the Buildings and Grounds building. Being identified as a Bard student may get you discounts to some Bard activities or discounts at outside organizations, including museums or galleries, that give discounts to students.
- Bard Libraries: Your Bard Student ID card will allow you to use the Stevenson Library.
Entertainment, Food, and Transportation
- Richard B. Fisher Center For The Performing Arts Discounts: Bard LLI Members can get a 20% discount and pay no purchasing fees for tickets to SOME performances. Use your Student ID card if purchasing in person or identify yourself as a Bard LLI member when ordering tickets over the phone. The Fisher Center Box Office (845-758-7900) has a list of current LLI members. You can also sign up for Fisher Center concert announcements on your email (https://fishercenter.bard.edu).
- Food On Campus: Bard LLI members may visit Kline Commons or the Down the Road Café in the Bertelsmann Campus Center to purchase meals.
- Bard Bookstore: Bard LLI members have access to the Bard College Bookstore located in the Bertelsmann Campus Center.
- Bard Shuttle: LLI members may use the Bard Shuttle buses. A schedule of stops can be found on the Bard website (https://blogs.bard.edu/transportation).
Mentors, Hospitality Rooms, and Announcements
- Mentors For New Members: Experienced LLI members volunteer to mentor new LLI members who may have questions or are seeking advice about the organization.
- Hospitality Rooms: In the fall and spring semesters, coffee, tea, and goodies can be found for LLI members on Fridays on the third floor of Olin, organized by the LLI Hospitality Committee.
- Announcements and Newsletter: Bard LLI will send out announcements to LLI members about LLI and Bard College activities around campus. And, of course, you will receive the informative monthly LLI newsletter with news and a listing of free local events and concerts.
What's Not Included
- Not Included in Bard LLI Membership: A Bard LLI membership or ID card does not include access to the Stevenson Athletic Center or pool (a membership to the pool may be purchased) or any Bard College courses.
Conclusion
Check out the Bard Lifetime Learning Institute Website for more news about Bard LLI, access to past newsletters, resources for tech help, a calendar of upcoming events, and a better sense of the vibrant learning community of older learners you are a part of. Please remember that we are guests of Bard College and are asked to follow LLI guidelines, as well as those of the college, as we enjoy the privileges of being on the campus.
