Professor Cai serves as director and conductor for the US-China Institute of the Bard College Conservatory of Music, as well as serving as a Professor of Music and Art at the Bard College Conservatory of Music.
He also holds the positions of Academic Director and Associate Conductor for The Orchestra Now at Bard. His distinguished 30-year career in music includes both academic and conducting positions at Stanford University and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
In 1989, at the beginning of his career, he was selected to study with famed conductor Leonard Bernstein at the Tanglewood Music Center, and in both 1990 and 1992, he won the Conducting Fellowship Award at the Aspen Music Festival. Finally, he is a three-time recipient of the ASCAP award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music.
The Institute itself is a new member of the Bard family, having been formed in 2017 with the stated goal of creating a major platform for the understanding and promotion of contemporary Chinese Music, as well as encouraging a robust musical exchange between China and the United States.
