The Astonishing Life and Career of Sir. Richard F. Burton (not the actor), Bad Boy, Victorian Polymath, Explorer, and Adventurer
One part Sir William Jones, one part Errol Flynn, one part Indiana Jones, and one part Allan Quatermain, Sir Richard F. Burton (1821-1890) was a real-life Victorian-era superhero. Burton spoke and read 24 languages. He was a soldier, fencer, orientalist, explorer, geographer, cartographer, ethnologist, translator, author, spy, linguist, poet, and diplomat. Once, while exploring East Africa, Burton’s face was impaled on a Somali tribesman’s javelin, yet Burton lived to display his scar. Burton is the original “Most Interesting Man in the World!
Presenter
Rev. Dr. Mark D. Isaacs, Ph.D., is the pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Wurtemburg in Rhinebeck and adjunct economics and European history professor at the Culinary Institute of America. While engaging in postdoctoral work and teaching, he has traveled to Europe, India, and Israel.

The Down the Road Café in the Campus Center will be open from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. serving lunches and drinks. Tables are also available for lunch brought from home and elsewhere.
LLI members and presenters may bring individual guests and are welcome at every presentation. The Bard community of faculty, staff and students are also welcome.
