Wander over in the direction of the Fisher Center, turn left and enter the old stone-faced building called Ward Manor. Go through the arched door and continue through the building and outside again onto the stone porch, where you will see a tall, stainless steel, tilted wonder called Stargon.
This kinetic sculpture, created by artist Robert Perless in 1987, was presented to Bard College by Toni and Martin Sosnoff.
Stargon is 80 feet tall and 50 feet wide. Its scale is grand enough to compete with the Catskill Mountains in the background, and if you walk up close to it (as you should), you will feel diminished. On a windy day, it will (gently) move in the wind like masts on a ghost ship.
Note: This vignette is the first in a series of visits to the outdoor sculpture installed on the Bard College campus.
