Although we are spending most of our time at home these days, we do have access to a wealth of resources to fill our pantries, maintain our health, and keep ourselves entertained. Here is a list of many available resources to help you through these difficult times. This list will also be available on the LLI website. We hope you find many of these options useful.
Food Shopping
Food Shopping:
- Adam’s Fairacre Farms is open for seniors from 7-8 a.m. every day;
- Hannaford in Red Hook and Kingston has an hour for seniors from 6-7 a.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays;
- Tops in Rhinebeck and New Paltz is open for seniors from 6-7:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Health
- Free video yoga classes offered by Rhinebeck’s Clear Yoga: different levels, including a basic level sequence and breathing sequence.
For Opera Lovers
- Metropolitan Opera: Stream a “new” opera daily right from your browser, each available from 7:30 p.m. EDT to 3:30 pm the following day;
- The Paris Opera is screening its performances online for free;
- And opera, ballet, and concerts from around the world are available at Bayerische Staatsoper.
For Classical Music Lovers
- WQXR is streaming concerts from all the world;
- The Guardian is streaming classical music and opera;
- The Berlin Philharmonic is offering live streams.
For Museum and Art Lovers
- Tour over 500 museums and art galleries online;
- Visit a Museum;
- Art Classes: Artsy.net provides information on 10 University Art Classes for Free Online.
For Book Lovers
- The Bard Hannah Arendt Center Virtual Reading Group (VRG) is currently available to you free of charge;
- Goodreads: Meet up with fellow book lovers at Goodreads. Explore genres, search for a good book, log your reading, message with friends, binge on the message boards and play word games of ALL sorts (check out the Coronavirus haiku thread!);
- Did you know that you can borrow digital and audio books from Mid-Hudson Library System (sign in with your library card) and read Kindle books on your smartphone or tablet or listen to audiobooks on your devices with Kindle and Audible apps?;
- New York Public Library as well, if you have an NYPL card;
- The Internet Archive has temporarily suspended all waitlists, allowing you to immediately check out any of the 1.4 million books currently in their lending library. Until June 30th or the end of the US national emergency (whichever comes later), every borrowable book will be immediately accessible by anyone—creating, in effect, a National Emergency Library.
For Board Game Lovers and Theater Lovers
For Board Game Lovers:
- Chess, Monopoly, Cards Against Humanity available online (what better time!!) and more.
For Theater Lovers:
- National Theatre of London will broadcast free full-length plays, with a new production shown every Thursday. The plays include classics, contemporary drama, and broad farce.
Courses, Storytelling and More
- TED Talk: – Video lectures on a wide range of fascinating topics;
- The Moth: – The Moth’s mission is to promote the art of storytelling and to honor and celebrate the diversity and commonality of human experience.It includes wonderful stories, story writing prompts, and writing activities for students now being homeschooled;
- Great Courses Plus: offering a free trial. Be sure you know how to cancel your membership if you wish to!;
- Open Culture: – offers free cultural and educational media on the web;
- Duolingo has 23 languages to learn free;
- Babbel – an online language learning program – is opening up their entire stash of language learning lessons to students this spring — totally free, no purchase necessary. In other words, all K-12 and college students can get free access to every language they offer for 3 months. If you know a student or educator who could benefit from this offer, send them the link to the Babbel student portal. LLI members can join as a student. - Coursera is a powerful tool for free online education, and includes courses from many top universities, museums, and trusts;
- Open Learning Initiative—Carnegie Mellon’s free online education site covers a smaller range of topics. But for the topics that are covered, impressive and in-depth material is available. Review their online programming here.
