Description: Have you ever seen a child’s eyes light up with wonder at the completion of a magic trick? Have you watched their amazement when a coin is made to disappear and is subsequently pulled from the back of his/her ear? Or when he/she has picked a card from a shuffled deck and it is immediately identified by the magician? Or, sitting at the table after dinner, the child tears a paper napkin to shreds. He then rolls the pieces into a little ball, squeezes it tightly, and opens it up, only to find the paper napkin restored? These are a few of the magic tricks you can learn by signing up for Magic for the Family.

Class Limit: 15

Presenter: Andrew Weintraub, magician, is founder of The CENTER for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck and The Rhinebeck Theatre Society. He is also the creator of Grumpus Magic at Rhinebeck’s annual Sinterklaas celebration.

Description: In 1920, the Treaty of Versailles officially ended World War I, and Prohibition went into effect. The Great Influenza pandemic subsided, Warren G. Harding was elected President, and women voted for the first time. It was the beginning of what became the Roaring 20s, an exciting (and foreboding) decade in politics and the arts: jazz, literature, Bauhaus, Broadway, movies, Picasso, Weimar, Hemingway, Gershwin, and so much more. Now, 100 years later, are we on the threshold of another “Roaring” decade?

Class Limit: None

Presenter: Chuck Mishaan, MA, (LLI) has been presenting his popular Opera as Politics course at Bard LLI for many years. His commentary on the intersection of politics and the arts continues with this course on the Roaring 20s.
