Council Responsibilities

What We Do

Council is the main governing body of LLI. It oversees all other committees. Council consists of elected officers, elected members at large and the appointed chairs of standing committees.

President's responsibilities

Key Tasks as Delineated in Bylaws:

  LLI’s Bylaws as Amended in 2023 can be viewed or downloaded here

  • Preside at all Council and annual meetings;
  • Serve as chairperson of the Executive Committee;
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of all other committees;
  • Oversee LLI finances;
  • Appoint committee chairs, subject to approval by Council.

Other Tasks, as of July 1, 2019:

  • Serve on Planning and Evaluation Committee;
  • Serve on Finance Committee;
  • Chair Governance Committee.

1st VP Responsibilities

Key Tasks, as Delineated in Bylaws:

  • Perform the President’s duties in case of his or her absence;
  • Serve as a member of the Executive Committee;
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of all other committees;
  • Ensure orientation and training of the Second Vice President;
  • Ensure orientation and training for new Council members;
  • Conduct, at least annually, a survey of the membership on LLI matters and prepare a report;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

Other Tasks Assigned by the President, as of July 1, 2019:

  • Serve on Planning and Evaluation Committee;
  • Serve as liaison to area LLIs and to Road Scholar.

Special Skills:

2nd VP Responsibilities

Key Tasks, as delineated in the Bylaws:

  • Perform the First Vice President’s duties in case of her or his absence;
  • Serve as a member of the Executive Committee;
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of all other committees;
  • Conduct a bylaws review every five (5) years or as needed;
  • Maintain a current operations manual;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the president.

Other Tasks Assigned by the President, as of July 1, 2019:

  • Serve on Planning and Evaluation committee;
  • Be responsible for workflow, as it informs Operations Manual.

Secretary responsibilities

Key Tasks, as delineated in the Bylaws:

  • Serve as a member of the Executive Committee;
  • Record and distribute the minutes of all Council meetings;
  • Prepare attendance sheets for all Council and annual meetings;
  • Maintain a file of approved minutes;
  • Maintain a file of confidential executive session minutes;
  • Maintain a current policy manual;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the president.

Other Tasks Assigned by the President, as of July 1, 2019:

  • Serve on Planning and Evaluation committee; 
  • Share responsibility (with Second Vice President) for recording and distributing minutes for Planning and Evaluation meetings; 
  • Request monthly reports from standing committees; prepare monthly mailings to Council;
  • Maintain lists of Council members by term and contact information;
  • Reserve room at Bertelsmann where Council meets.

  • Ability to take notes during meetings and produce clear useful minutes;

Treasurer Responsibilities

Key Tasks, As Delineated in the Bylaws:

  • Serve as a member of the Executive Committee;
  • Work with the office of the comptroller of Bard College to process disbursements and receipts of LLI at Bard;
  • Prepare a financial statement for all Council meetings;
  • Prepare an annual budget for Council approval and report to the membership at the annual meeting for adoption;
  • Prepare an annual report;
  • Serve on the Finance Team;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the president.

Other Tasks Assigned by the President, as of July 1, 2019:

  • Serve on Planning and Evaluation Committee;
  • Serve as liaison to Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) for student stipends;
  • Serve as liaison to Bard administration regarding LLI donations to the College (together with LLI President);
  • Manage the annual Dean Stuart Stritzler-Levine Seniors-to-Seniors Scholarship distributions to assist students with their senior projects.

Special Skills:

  • Knowledge and competence with standard bookkeeping practices;
  • Attention to significant detail, especially using financial reporting programs;

Members at large responsibilities

Key Tasks, as delineated in the Bylaws:

  • Represent the interests of the general membership;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the president.

Meet members' needs

You elect the council members during the annual elections. Standing committee chairs, which are voting members of Council, are appointed by the president.
